Lecture by Dr. Rama Rao Gogineni: “Immigrants and Their Children: Acculturation and Adaptation:
In the rapidly changing demographic landscape of the United States, 36 Million immigrants(12%) are immigrants.15 Million are children of immigrants 20% of children in US are children of immigrants Over 1 in 5 U.S. Children have immigrant parents. Most children of immigrants are U.S. born citizens. 2nd generation immigrants often question “What does it mean to be a second-generation immigrant in the United States? Does it mean that one is an Iranian, an American or a fine blend of both cultures? How do I determine my Identity? How do I balance what I learn at home with what I see at school or work? How do I deal with resentment or hate crimes?” The presentation will address how the stresses of immigration and acculturation and the factors of resiliency and risk effect immigrants and their children and their families. The divergent, often well-hidden, worldviews, cognitions may cause interfamilial conflicts and interfere with the child’s developmental process. Will present ways of promoting immigrant parents’ ability and comfort in the new culture independently or in conjunction with encouraging biculturalism.
