The Opening of Middle East Galleries at Penn Museum
Saturday, April 21 and Sunday, April 22 · 10:00 am to 4:00 pm
Penn Museum
3260 South Street, Philadelphia, PA 19104
The Penn Museum opens its long-awaited new Middle East Galleries—featuring more than 1,200 ancient artifacts excavated at sites in what is now Iran and Iraq beginning in the 1880s—with an opening weekend festival! You are invited to come out and enjoy the sights, sounds, smells, and tastes of the region, past and present, during a two-day celebration filled with activities for all ages.
The weekend features traditional musical performances, including a Sunday afternoon performance with the Al-Bustan Ensemble and guests; a Gilgamesh puppet show and Middle Eastern storytelling; ancient cuneiform tablet, cylinder seal, and Arabic calligraphy workshops; films, lectures, and meet-the-expert stations. A marketplace features tea, food and craft vendors, and a spice station beckoning guests to smell, touch, and learn about the region’s spices. The Zoo on Wheels brings in animals from the Middle East, while outside, a local Iraqi Unity Cup team demonstrates football (soccer). Creative engineering activities, games, and crafts round out the activities. The Pepper Mill Café offers a special Middle East menu throughout the weekend.
